In SAEA’s virtual winter conference, Structural Engineer Dr. Nahlawi outlined the known advantages of 3D Printing in Construction. He shared the following advantages in his discussion:
-Reduced Injury Potential
-Reduced Material Costs
-Quicker Construction
-New Markets
-Cheaper Construction
-Accommodate new shapes and design
-Brand Improvement
Given these features available with 3D Printing in construction, SAEA members discussed the possibility to use 3D printing technology for temporary housing in disaster scenarios such as refugee camps and housing for internally displaced people (IDP) in Syria. This would be an effective method given the quick, cheap construction and reduced material costs. Equipment and exotic admixtures may be a challenge but can be imported from Syria’s neighboring countries such as Turkey or Lebanon.
