Civil-Structural Engineer Abdullah Ibraheem of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) presented to SAEA members during the Spring conference about the role of engineering teams in Climate Change and Natural Disaster scenarios.
With the rise in CO2 emissions and greenhouse gas emissions, along with rising sea levels, natural disasters are becoming more severe on average, are more expensive, and threaten the well-being of our earth.
Ibraheem posited to the group that the Role of engineering teams is adaptation and mitigation measures. Hazard mitigation is any sustainable action that reduces or eliminates long-term risk to people and property from future disasters. Engineering solutions can be utilized to help minimize the impact of disasters, and break the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction.
