In today’s virtual winter conference, SAEA founding member Engineer Dr. Khaled Nahlawi presented on concrete 3D printing technology and construction applications focusing on materials and structural design challenges.

Nahlawi shared that 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process of joining materials together, usually in a layering process, to form a physical object. SAEA members learned about the components of 3D printers, their advantages, how this applies to concrete mixtures, the companies included in this global industry, and dove into the question: is concrete 3D printing ready for large-scale construction?

Nahlawi also examined 3D printing’s history and first use, as well as its future as a key part of the structural engineering field.
