In SAEA’s recent virtual winter conference, Board member and Civil/Structural Engineer Beirakdar reported on the flooding of US interstate highway I-94 in the Detroit metro area which occurred in the summer of 2021. The flooding left many cars underwater, flooded basements and a messy aftermath.

Dearborn residents, where there is a high concentration of the Arab-American community, were impacted especially hard by the floods, and volunteers assisted the local community in cleaning out their basements.

Engineer Beirakdar presented and led a conversation regarding the flooding, cause and effect scenarios and mitigation of future flooding on key roads like I-94 to answer the question: why did this happen?  And in such a developed and modern Detroit metro area?
